Domestic violence might be defined as a “hidden crime” because it is committed behind closed doors, and thus does not receive the same level of focus as crimes that are committed in public. It can also become a violent incident; research has found that 14 percent of all homicides involve domestic violence, and about one-fourth of all aggravated assaults involved domestic violence.

Most agencies now have specific policies regarding officers’ response to incidents of domestic violence. Common practices include:
Approach carefully: First responders are to observe and listen before announcing their presence, in order to protect themselves and gather information.
