The intersectional perspective suggests women of diverse ethnic groups will be similar in some ways and different in others. Using the intersectional perspective, explain how women’s experience of their gender depends, in part, on their ethnicity.
What will be an ideal response?
An individual’s gender and ethnicity are both influential identities. Our identities shape our experiences throughout life because people are treated differently based on their various identities. Women of color come from many different cultures and have histories of oppression and discrimination, which shapes their experience of the world and life. Women as a whole group may go through similar experiences, such as objectification and intimate partner violence. However, women of color often have unique experiences, such as different media representations and stereotypes. There are many differences among women of color, some resulting from origin of land, others resulting from greater poverty and discrimination experienced by members of some ethnic groups. An intersectional perspective considers how women’s experiences differ based on their ethnicities and other identities.
