There are many contrasts between middle-and working-class membership in the United States. The
middle class often earns income sufficient to permit savings and has both advanced education and
marketable skills. Its members have what is called a conceptual orientation, using their mental
capacities to solve problems, and their jobs often involve the manipulation of symbols rather than
objects. Their working-life focus is on occupational advancement and competent performance, and
their jobs are often quite specialized and responsible. Members of the working class, on the other
hand, typically have more serious financial concerns and not enough salary to permit savings. They
are more likely to have on-the-job training than a formal education. Their orientation toward life is
considered to be motoric, in that they manipulate objects rather than symbols.
