What are the functions of the 5' cap and poly(A ) tail of mature mRNAs in eukaryotes?

What will be an ideal response?

Both protect the mRNA from degradation by exonucleases. The 5' cap is also important for the binding of the ribosome at the beginning of translation. The poly(A ) tail is required for efficient export of the mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
