Discuss how cultural forces may influence emotional development and emotion regulation
How has this topic been studied?
What will be an ideal response?
Many parents in Western societies encourage autonomy and emotional expression in
their children; however, parents in other cultures may embrace more of a collectivist
stance. For example, in these cultures, children may be encouraged to be more
dependent and remain in closer proximity to their parents. These children may be
somewhat more restrained emotionally because they may learn that they do not need to
strongly express their emotions to garner attention. That is, because proximity is
encouraged, the caregiver is normally nearby and more available. To test this theory,
researchers have elicited a variety of emotions in babies from different cultures to study
their emotional expressions and regulatory abilities. Although certain methods, such as
arm restraint, reliably elicit the same emotions in infants, the intensity and duration of
these displays does vary across cultures, and largely supports some of the
aforementioned assumptions about the role of culture in the development of emotions.
