What is freedom of movement according to Rotter? Use Rotter's psychological needs and concept of freedom of movement to explain Randall's decision to argue/fight with a schoolmate who is verbally abusive.

What will be an ideal response?

Freedom of movement is the idea that certain behaviors can lead to the satisfaction of a need, that a behavior will lead to a desired outcome. Randall appears to have a high need for recognition or status, as evidenced by his need to gain respect from his schoolmates. By bullying others into backing down after they have insulted him, Randall thinks he is more likely to gain other's respect, i.e., fulfill his need for recognition or status. Thus, his fighting results in a higher likelihood that his needs will be fulfilled. He believes his behavior will lead to the desired outcome: respect. This is known as high freedom of movement.

Randall is also experiencing low freedom of movement with regards to finishing high school. He believes that he is actually less likely to graduate by choosing to fight with another student, but he believes it unlikely that he will graduate regardless of his actions, even positive ones.
