Please discuss how you would begin a group therapy series. What would a typical first class look like?

What will be an ideal response?

The first day would be used to set the tone for the rest of the group meetings. In order to get onto rapport building and to see what the group dynamic looks like, I would go over rules, and other housekeeping items such as the number of sessions, timeframe, confidentiality, and so on. I would then talk about more sensitive rules or guidelines, and make sure to do so in an age appropriate fashion. Confidentiality would need to be broken down in an understandable manner for children too. Also, in order to be ethical, I would need to explain that I could guarantee my own confidentiality limits, but not others. I would ask the group if they had any questions or other rules they would like the group to abide by. I would post all mandatory and decided upon group guidelines and rules in a public space so that we could easily go back to them if things get off track in the future.
