What will be an ideal response?
The term female genital mutilation (FGM) refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for nonmedical reasons. Almost exclusively, the term is used to describe a procedure for which parents must give consent due to the age of the minor. In addition to the pain involved, the procedure interferes with normal functioning of the body and causes several immediate and long-term health consequences. Procedures that typically occur between infancy and age 15 cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, infertility, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths. According to WHO (2013), about 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the con- sequences of FGM; approximately 101 million are in Africa alone.
