A client might come to an Adlerian to get rid of his stammering. Instead, the therapist would paradoxically encourage the client to stammer when the therapist told him to do so as a method of cure. The client practices stammering under the therapist’s direction and the therapist should explain that stammering not only is not defective speech and is not deplorable, but rather that it is a necessary accomplishment.
