Research accident avoidance systems used in current or planned automated vehicles. Summarize how the systems function.

The use of multiple computerized systems in an automobile increases
use of the various control systems that improve the safety of the car and driver. From the advent of antilock brakes (Antilock Brake System or ABS), to the Vehicle
Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM), we have seen technologies employed to make
driving safer. Here are some of the more frequently seen techniques:
• Traction Control: Senses when the vehicle wheels are rotating at diff erent speeds and
applies corrective action using the brake system to slow the faster wheel.
• Brake Assist: When a panic stop is detected, the systems optimize the braking for
maximum eff ect.
• Vehicle Stability Control: A yaw sensor detects when the vehicle is going in a direction
other than intended (such as when a car spins on ice). The systems control the brakes
and apply steering input to assist in getting the car back on track.
• VDIM: The Lexus RX 400 uses VDIM to correct control loss on a slippery road, by
applying automated individual wheel braking, throttle activation/control, and
steering assistance to bring the vehicle under control.
