Why does fluid intelligence decline over the adult years?
What will be an ideal response?
Declines in performance on tasks measuring fluid intelligence may be due to the biological slowing of the central nervous system, as evident in declines in processing speed. Other research points to declines in frontal lobe functioning and reductions in interconnectivity in explaining declines in fluid intelligence. The ability to quickly update one's working memory is closely related to measures of fluid intelligence, and some research suggests that it is the decline in working memory updating rather than speed that causes age changes in fluid intelligence. Most notably, training in tasks that tap working memory are associated with improvements in fluid intelligence tasks.
