Describe the supporting evidence for the endosymbiotic theory

What will be an ideal response?

There are two lines of evidence that directly support the endosymbiotic theory. Firstly, the DNA in
both mitochondria and chloroplasts is arranged in a circular molecule, just as is observed in
prokaryotic genomes. Secondly, phagocytized cells and organelles have been directly observed
surviving inside the phagocytic cell. In addition to the direct evidence, the development of a symbiotic
relationship would have benefited both participants. Over time, it would make sense for some of the
DNA to be transferred to the host cell's genome so that is was under the control of the host cell. This
process would have led to the development of the chloroplasts and mitochondria present in cells today.
