What is premature labor, what are the warning signs, and how is it related to infant mortality?

Premature labor is labor that occurs after the 20th week but before the 37th week of pregnancy. The warning signs of premature labor include a dull, low backache; a feeling of tightness or pressure on the lower abdomen; and intestinal cramps, sometimes with diarrhea. Prematurity is the main underlying cause of stillbirth and infant deaths within the first few weeks after birth. Bed rest, close monitoring, and, if necessary, medications for at-risk women can buy more time in the womb for their babies.
