Authoritarians make decisions and impose them on groups. This works best when quick
decisions are needed, the tasks are relatively simple, and/or a large group needs control.
Democratic leaders empower group members to participate. Member satisfaction is high;
members feel ownership of decisions in which they have participated. This type of leadership
requires training and patience. It works best when task are detailed or complicated, when
sufficient time exists, and/or when group approval is needed. Laissez-faire leaders devote little
involvement to the group. This works best when members are trained professionals who need
little guidance. Groups lacking guidance can experience low satisfaction and productivity.
