Discuss the roles of glutamate and GABA in treating a person with epilepsy.

What will be an ideal response?

Glutamate is an excitatory amino acid that is largely responsible for seizure activity in the brain. The widespread action of glutamate spreads across the brain, resulting in seizure activity. GABA, an inhibitory amino acid, usually stops the spread of glutamate activity by counteracting it. Someone with epilepsy would probably be prescribed a medication that promotes GABA.
