Why might attention-deficit disorder affect the ability of someone with the disorder to learn and retain information?

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER:
In order for information to be retained beyond the brief time it is in sensory memory, attention must be applied to hold the information or it will fade away for good. Inattention would distract the person to other information elements. As a result, the new information is not available for further processing along the memory pathway. Also, in order to hold information in working memory via maintenance rehearsal, attention is needed. For more extensive elaborative rehearsal, attention again serves a crucial role in allowing for the creation of mental associations.
?
Recent research shows that individuals with attention-deficit disorder may have faulty central executive functioning in their working memory that undermines their ability to attend to and integrate information from auditory and visuospatial sources. This same problem may make it difficult for a person with attention-deficit disorder to attend to information presented in educational setting. Even if the person were able to attend to such information, the difficulty in executive function makes integrating that information less likely. This will inhibit the ability to engage in elaborative rehearsal. This, in turn, will undermine one’s ability to retain information even when it has been attended to.?
