a. Articulated drain
b. Baffle
c. Blanketing
d. Boot
e. Containment wall
f. Floating roof
g. Gauge hatch
h. Manway
i. Mist eliminator
j. Sump
k. Vortex breaker
l. Weir
a. An articulated drain is a hinged drain, attached to the roof of an external floating roof tank, that moves up and down as the roof and the fluid levels rise and fall.
b. A baffle is a metal plate, placed inside a tank or other vessel, that is used to alter the flow of chemicals and facilitate mixing.
c. Blanketing is the process of putting an inert gas, usually nitrogen, into the vapor space above the liquid in a vessel to prevent air leakage into it (often referred to as a “nitrogen blanket”).
d. A boot is a section in the lowest area of a process vessel where water or other liquid is collected and removed.
e. A containment wall is an earthen berm or constructed wall used to protect the environment and people against tank failures, fires, runoff, and spills; also called bund wall, bunding, dike, or firewall.
f. A floating roof is a type of vessel covering (steel or plastic), used on storage tanks, that floats upon the surface of the stored liquid and is used to decrease vapor space and reduce the potential for evaporation.
g. A gauge hatch is an opening on the roof of a vessel that is used to check tank levels and obtain samples of the contents.
h. A manway is an opening in a vessel or tank that permits entry for inspection or repair.
i. A mist eliminator is a device in the top of a vessel, composed of mesh, vanes, or fibers, that collects droplets of mist (moisture) from gas to prevent it from leaving the vessel and moving forward with the gas flow (also known as a demister).
j. A sump is an area of temporary storage located in the bottom of a vessel from which undesirable material is removed.
k. A vortex breaker is a metal plate, or similar device, that prevents a vortex from being created as liquid is drawn out of the vessel.
l. A weir is a flat or notched dam or barrier to liquid flow that is normally used either for the measurement of fluid flows or to maintain a given depth of fluid, as on a tray of a distillation column, in a separator, or other vessel.
