Explain what is meant by the rain shadow effect.
What will be an ideal response?
A rain shadow is caused by a large land mass that prevents the movement of precipitation across a region of land. Typically, mountain ranges that are located close to the coast will cause a rain shadow effect. As the cool, moist air comes in off of the ocean it hits the mountain range, creating a temperate environment. As the air descends down the leeward side of the mountain range it will absorb moisture from the ground, producing a warm and dry climate. This often creates a desert biome.
