Often the spleen is obscured by stomach contents, but it can be located by percussing for a dull note from the 6th to the 10th rib. Normally, the upper border of dullness is found 6 to 8 cm above the left costal margin. Dullness beyond the 8 cm line is indicative of splenic enlargement. Splenic enlargement can be caused by portal hypertension resulting from liver disease. It can also be caused by disorders such as mononucleosis, thrombosis, and infection.
