Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are professionals trained to identify, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communicative disorders. An SLP must obtain a master's degree from a graduate program that is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). A graduate student must complete a minimum of 36 hours of graduate work and 400 hours of client contact. After a student completes the graduate program, the student will take his or her first job in speech-language pathology and complete the clinical fellowship. This consists of working 36 weeks of mentored practice that includes diagnosis, treatment, record keeping, and regularly scheduled meetings with the fellowship mentor. In addition to completing the clinical fellowship, the SLP must pass a
national examination that is administered by ASHA. The person is then awarded the Certificate of Clinical Competence in SLP (CCC-SLP). SLPs can work in educational settings, hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, private clinics, home health care, and university clinics.
