Compare and contrast catastrophism with the principle of uniformitarianism. How do these ideas

The student should discuss neptunism and catastrophism as proposed by, for example, Abraham
Gottlob Werner in the 18th century. Also important in the discussion is the confrontation by
catastrophists, including Cuvier, in the 19th century with uniformitarianists, including James
Hutton and Charles Lyell. Students may also indicate that uniformitarianism has, to some extent,
absorbed some of the ideas of catastrophism by incorporating ideas about meteorite impacts and
