What are field studies? Please identify and explain the four different types of field studies discussed in the text, and point out the advantage or purpose of each

What will be an ideal response?

Field studies involve conducting research among the people the researcher wants to study. Different forms of field research include: detached observation, in which the researcher is not in any way involved in the phenomena being studied, which has the advantage of not influencing or changing what is being studied; participant observation in which the researcher can better "get inside" the experience by participating (for example as a group member) while observing; ethnography, a field method used often by anthropologists, in which the researchers live and work with the groups they're studying in order to try to see the world from the others' point of view; field experiments in which people (often in pairs such as male/female or black/white) are sent into the "field" or real life situations to find out how those of different races, ethnicities, or genders are treated. The advantage is that while most experiments are conducted in the lab and thus may not be realistic, a field experiment is conducted in a more realistic situation or setting. (They are experiments because the researcher manipulates the independent variable, in these examples, race or sex.)
