The professional's role is to find ways to develop partnerships with family members. They may do this through frequent interactions with all family members (where appropriate) to learn more about the family, what their needs are, what concerns they have, and how they function as a family unit. Professionals should also be empathetic and understanding of the family cultural values, ideas, and practices, while also being respectful how family's decision-making. They should use the "partnership principles" identified by Turnbull et al. such as: communication, respect, trust, commitment, equality, and advocacy.
