There is a tendency for people to refer to fossil groups in terms of analogies with living groups. For example, the Miocene hominoids are frequently referred to as "apes." Although these forms may have ancestral to modern apes (and humans as well), they are not really apes in the modern sense. What is the danger in calling early hominoids, such as Aegyptopithecus and Proconsul, a monkey or an ape?
