Describe how the research and treatment of non-privileged individuals resulted in the implication by several critics that positive psychology had failed to account for culture both in research and practice.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Psychology was previously focused almost entirely on weaknesses, and theories, research, and treatments were built upon Western ideals of functioning. People of color, women, and other marginalized groups were often pathologized because of the comparisons to the majority groups. Although positive psychology was viewed as a balanced perspective, it too was built upon theories, research, and treatments that pandered to mainstream Western culture, which resulted in less, or nearly nonexistent, research about strengths within other cultures.
