In some crimes, a third party may stand witness. Witnesses tend to not intervene (simply watch but do nothing), take indirect actions (such as calling 911), or directly get involved (try to stop the attack or even conduct a citizen's arrest). Research has shown the impact of having bystanders can either cause the offender to back down or not even attempt the crime. On the other hand, bystanders may cause the crime to escalate, as the offender may want to save face or protect their reputation. "Bystander effect" has been studied by social psychologists for some time. The findings from this field indicate as the number of bystanders' increases, the chance any one individual will intervene decreases and the amount of time until someone does intervene takes longer. Often bystanders need to be asked for assistance. Bystanders may feel a moral duty to assist, but most states do not provide for a legal obligation. Good Samaritan laws shield bystanders from having to pay expenses or being sued.
