Describe the trait theory of Costa and McCrae. How has their research shown support for this

theory?  What are some current findings trait theorists have documented regarding the
stability of personality during adulthood?

What will be an ideal response?

Costa and McCrae stipulate that personality structure is relatively fixed during
adulthood. They assert that our personality structure is comprised of 5 major traits:
Openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and
neuroticism. They have assessed these traits using questionnaire, interview,
observational, and q-sort methods. Although adults consistently perform similarly on
these measures over time, it is also true that there are time periods when there are mean
differences in trait scores across different age groups. This finding would suggest that
our personality structure remains somewhat stable during adulthood, yet, there may be
times when it  slightly changes as well.
