What created the current dilemmas for Angelina?
Social worker Angelina Pettit enjoyed practicing in a faith-based agency, where she found deep personal meaning in her work with clients. However, the work was complicated by the agencyís integral connections with her church. Her husband, Philip, a group leader in their church, invited Jacob and Raymond, two single men in his group and the church who were also Angelinaís clients, to their home for Christmas dinner. Angelina generally felt successful in managing her dual relationships, but it seemed this situation was hitting ìtoo close to home.î Their coming to dinner could challenge her sense of professionalism regarding dual relationships. But, she felt compelled to follow her faith and belief that individuals should not be alone during the Christmas season, and that celebrating community and being loved within the church family was important.
Angelina enjoyed her social work practice at IMH, especially because it brought much meaning to her life once again. IMH and CUS have had an integrated relationship since the churchís inception and Angelina has been caught in a few personal dilemmas. She valued her religious beliefs and was professionally obligated to the NASW Code of Ethics. Her husband, Philip, to
whom she was also dedicated, invited two of her clients, Raymond and Jacob, over for Christmas dinner without first consulting Angelina. Angelina had dealt well with her professional and personal relationships thus far. Although she might have had neighbors or congregants in her home, she had never had her clients over to enjoy an evening meal. Philip knew that Raymond and Jacob were her clients at IMH, and was only doing what he and Angelina believed was the right thing to do. Angelina was concerned about the effect of the visit on her social work role with her clients, her relationship with Philip, and her professional reputation.
