Explain Piaget's four stages of cognitive development. What is the implication for teaching?

What will be an ideal response?

ANS: The sensorimotor stage is the first stage, in which children learn mainly through sensory impressions and movements; it occurs from birth to about 18 to 24 months. Between ages 2 and 7, learning is preoperational; children learn words and other symbols. Concrete operations, around ages 7 to 11, involves the ability to generalize concepts from concrete experiences. In the stage of formal operations, from age 11 onward, the person has the ability to manipulate mental abstractions. Students are not passive; they are active builders of their knowledge. Educators apply their understanding of these four stages in planning instruction for the children they teach.
