Partly fueled by the development of surplus agriculture, and partly influenced by the new goods and trade routes re-discovered during the Crusades, Western European cities grew significantly in the Middle Ages in developing commerce and trade. Italian city states, particularly, developed an emphasis on Maritime trade, given the relative ease of transport along port cities, maintained connection to far-ranging travel such as Constantinople and the Black Sea area. Traveling trade fairs contributed to the growth of commerce between towns. In Champagne, northern France, there were six annual trade fairs that attracted merchants from all over Europe. One aspect of this was that different coinage stimulated the development of banking techniques. In northern Europe, urban development was slower, but in Flanders, a nexus of trade developed between Britain, the Baltics, and eventually Italy.
