There are two primary methods used to attach stone veneer to a building's exterior. One is installed in individual panels on site using either cement or mechanical means, while the other is pre-fabricated offsite and installed in integral panels. In the conventional piece-by-piece stone facade system, the stone is installed by using steel angles, strap anchors, dowels, and mortar or by other mechanical systems. One method of cladding a soffit is to apply the stone panels over a masonry back up wall in Portland cement at discreet points. Another system uses a fiberglass mesh Portland cement backing board fastened to the structural frame and adhering the stone with mortar.
The mechanical system utilizes a metal sub-frame that is mounted to a structural concrete or steel frame, or to masonry backup walls. The stone panels are retained by angles fitted into slots cut into the side of the stone. The location and amount of anchors used are functions of the spanning capability of the stone. If non-corrosive metals are used, they must be protected from electrolytic reaction. Joints between panels are typically 1/4 in. (.635 cm) in width but vary widely by product. Manufacturers often supply or recommend engineering approved connections and installation details.?
