Discuss the benefits of using evidence based treatments.

What will be an ideal response?

Kettlewell (2004) suggested that one benefit is that “evidence-based treatments (EBT) provide guidance to better serve our patients or clients”. He points out that most people expect their health care professional to provide the best known treatment. A second argument for using EBT/EBP, according to Kettlewell (2004) is as follows: “Using the scientific approach to evaluate treatment is the best way to advance our knowledge so that we can provide even better care in the future”. Developing a fund of information about best practices enhances the status of the field. Another rationale for using EBT/EBP cited by Kettlewell (2004) is that “. . . we need to use wisely the limited resources for mental health services”. A fourth argument presented by Kettlewell (2004) for using EBT/EBP is as follows: “We have treatments that work and most practitioners do not use them”. Whether in education or counseling, practitioners have a tendency not to use the research literature to guide their practice, but make decisions based upon personal beliefs and values. Providing clarity about the effectiveness of practice can be passed along to improve outcomes. A final argument for using EBT/EBP is founded on the question: “Is there a better alternative than to use science to guide practice?”
