Why do you think the police have such a high suicide rate within their profession?
What will be an ideal response?
Contributing factors in police suicides, as with other victims of suicide, are alcohol, family issues, and the breakup of relationships. The public's image of the police, and indeed officers' image of themselves, is that of the strong protector of society. Yet police work forces officers to confront the dark side of human nature daily and may eventually cause officers to lose their faith in the goodness of humanity or in their abilities to make a positive impact on the lives of others. This sense of weakness and failure is so contradictory to the image of the police that some officers may simply see no other choice than to "take themselves out of the game.".
