Explain the benefit of having a bank of capacitors installed in the accompanying circuit.
What will be an ideal response?
The ideal power transmission occurs when the current is in phase with the voltage or when the power factor is 1. With this condition, a minimum amount of current is required to deliver a given amount of power. If line current can be reduced, less current needs to be generated to obtain the required results. This condition can be accomplished by connecting a capacitor or bank of capacitors across the line or in parallel with the inductive equipment, as shown in the figure.
