• Form fields
A field is a form area into which users can insert a specific piece of data, such as their last name or address. Form fields include text fields, hidden fields, and file fields. Text fields can accept both numbers and letters, known as alphanumeric data. A text field can contain single or multiple lines of data. Hidden fields store information about the user and can be used by the company originating the form at a later time, such as the next time the user visits their website. File fields allow users to browse to a file on their computer and upload, or transfer, it to the form host web server.
• Radio buttons
Radio buttons are option buttons that appear as small empty circles on a form that users click to select a choice. A selected radio button has a black fill. Radio buttons in a group are mutually exclusive, meaning that the user can select only one choice at a time.
• Check boxes
Check boxes are small squares on a form. To select a choice, users click to place a check mark inside the box(es). In a series of check boxes, it is possible to select more than one check box.
• Lists and menus
Lists and menus provide the user with a list or menu of choices to select. Lists display the choices in a scrolling format, while menus display the choices in a pop-up set of choices. Lists and menus provide a fast method of entering information that may be tedious for the user to type.
• Buttons
Buttons (not to be confused with radio buttons) are usually small rectangular objects containing a text label. When a user clicks a button, a task is performed, such as submitting the form or clearing the form. To submit the form means to send the information on the form to the host web server for processing. Clearing, or resetting, the form means to erase all form entries and set the values back to the default settings.
