How much fiber does the typical American get and why isn't this number higher?

Most Americans get between 10-15 grams of fiber a day which is less than half of what they should get. The recommendations for fiber are not publicized due to lack of funding for advertising. Many people eat a lot of processed or fast food which has very little fiber.
