Why it is important to get an informed consent form signed by the patient before a procedure?

Legally the patient must be adequately informed about the potential outcomes, risks, and any adverse effects associated with the procedure before performing a procedure. The signed consent form is a legal document that indicates the patient has been informed and has an adequate level of understanding for the procedure. This form can help the defense in a medical malpractice lawsuit.
