Explain the role of monocytes in the inflammatory response

Monocytes are involved in the second component of the inflammatory response known as the phagocyte response. Circulating monocytes exit the blood by diapedesis. When they arrive at the damaged tissue, they enlarge and mature into macrophages, a response that takes several hours. As macrophages, pathogens and damaged cells are phagocytized in greater numbers than in the initial phase of neutrophil response.
