As a result of the turbulent decade of the 1960s, several policies were put in place to try and change the composition of the police force. The desire was to see more racial minority and female officers hired, as to be more representative of the communities they serve. To that end, two sets of policies were crafted, namely equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws. The results of these laws have been substantial. While female and racial minorities are still largely underrepresented in many police departments, the composition of the police force is much more diverse than it was in the 1960s.
