What are the four phases of the normal swallow? Describe each phase

What will be an ideal response?

rhe oral preparatory phase prepares solids and liquids för swallowing and forms them into a bolus. The soft palate lowers and the tongue gathers all the material in the oral cavity. During the oral phase, the bolus is moved to the back of the mouth when the tongue elevates and pushes against the hard palate. Lips are closed during this phase and respiration continues through the nasal cavity. During the pharyngeal phase, the bolus moves from the back of the oral cavity through the pharynx to the opening of the esophagus. The pharyngeal swallow triggers when the bolus moves from the back of the oral cavity through the pharynx to the opening of the esophagus. The nasal cavity is closed off, the velum is elevated,
and the larynx raises and moves slightly forward. The vocal folds close to ensure no food or liquid enters the airway. During the esophageal phase, the upper esophageal sphincter opens and the bolus moves through the esophagus.
