Contrast between responsibility and authority using correctional organization examples
What will be an ideal response?
Answers should contain the following discussion points:
Responsibility is the expectation and obligation to carry out assigned duties. In a probation office, the chief probation officer is responsible for managing the office and assuring offenders complete all the conditions of their probation. Probation officers are held responsible for carrying out their assigned functions, such as conducting office visits with probationers, doing home visits, or confirming employment and program participation. When tasks are assigned, it is essential that staff take responsibility to complete these tasks in the prescribed manner.
Authority is the right of workers to give orders and have an expectation that those receiving the orders will comply with them. In a typical private company or public agency, authority usually is only vested in management and supervisory-level employees. However, in a correctional agency, all staff members supervise offenders and must have the authority to get compliance with policies that impact offender behavior.
