Describe the milestones of language development in infancy. Will babies learning two languages be delayed in language development?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Cooing occurs around 2 months, and includes gurgling sounds such as "oo" and "ah". Babbling occurs around 4–10 months, and includes repetitive consonant-vowel combinations such as "bababa". First gestures occur around 8–10 months, such as waving to communicate "bye-bye". Comprehension of words and simple sentences occurs around 10–12 months (infants at this age typically understand up to 50 words). First spoken word occurs around 12 months (for English speakers, first words tend to include important people, such as "Mama").
Babies learning more than one language at the same time do not seem to be stunted in language development. These babies tend to reach the same milestones in both languages at the same time as monolingual babies.
