Ans: Research matters because it helps us answer a variety of questions and evaluate the quality of the answers to those questions. For the first, the questions can vary from the everyday to the very important. In psychology and as a student, some questions research might help me answer include how to study more effectively and how to choose a future spouse. In answering these questions, research can evaluate the quality of the answers. We should consider the sample size, possible errors in thinking, and how best to test the theory. For example, if a student wishes to know how to study more effectively, he could ask his friends, but if he only has two friends and both of those are failing—they might not represent the best sample. If the student wishes to learn about how to choose the best spouse, he could read a number of articles both for and against his own idea that opposites attract and find the best quality answer by summarizing across the research.
