How can cracks in martensite be prevented?
What will be an ideal response?
Martensite is very hard and brittle and must be checked for cracks periodically. If cracks form in the hard martensite layer they can move into the softer austenitic below. There cracks, like cracks in glass, will continue moving through the part until it breaks. Removing the cracks by welding them up or cutting them out is the only way to prevent them from causing the part to fail.
