What are some of most prominent police unions in the United States?
What will be an ideal response?
There are two major police associations in the United States: the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the oldest, founded in 1915 in Pittsburgh, reporting a membership of over 300,000, with lodges in all 50 states; and the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), essentially an association of independent bargaining units which works cooperatively on national legislation affecting their membership, with a membership of 220,000 in 4000 local associations.
In addition to these organizations, there are a number of AFL-CIO affiliated unions with substantial police membership. The most prominent of these is the International Union of Police Associations, which reports a membership of 100,000; the International Brotherhood of Police Officers has about 10,000; there are other smaller groupings of police officers within larger communication and government employees associations, but no reliable membership figures are available.
