Cellular phones are becoming the primary means for telephone communication in developing countries. Hardwiring (copper or fi ber) does not have to be in place to use cell phones. Discuss how cell phones operate, including the need for cell towers, roaming, and satellite connectivity. Include the issue of privacy in your discussion. It is easy to listen to other people’s cellular conversations, but is it legal?

What will be an ideal response?

A cell phone has a ¼ and receiver built into it. When you speak, your voice sound wave is converted into a digital signal transmitted a short distance to a cell tower. The cell tower amplifies and retransmits the signal to another tower. If a long distance is required, the signal will be sent to a satellite and eventually to a cell tower near the called number and then to the number. If the person receiving or transmitting the signal is moving, the signal is handed off from one cell tower to another. It is illegal to eavesdrop on other’s conversations, but there is virtually no enforcement of this.
