Discuss the challenges of using number lines and counters to teach about magnitude and direction of integers
What will be an ideal response?
One challenge for students is not connecting the visual representation to the equation. This can be addressed by having student model with counters and or number lines and record each step with an equation.
Another challenge is doing these problems without a context. If students can think about what is happening with the counters or number line as temperature changing or money amounts fluctuating it provides a real-world context for the operations.
