What happens to a star when the fusion cycle gets to the element iron?

Answer: When elements near iron, or iron itself is fused, energy is absorbed by the fusion reaction instead of released. This cools rather than heats the star, and the show is over. The star then undergoes collapse without rekindling. The most massive of these stars may supernova.
