How did popular culture affect the presentation of personal style and culture?
What will be an ideal response?
The greater availability of mass media transmitted the cult of celebrity throughout the world via radio, TV, magazines, and movies. Instead of looking to political or religious leaders for models to emulate, people turned increasingly to the lifestyles they saw glamorized in the media. For some, this was an escapist outlet and a means to transcend the limitations of class restrictions; for others, it was the freedom of possibility. Rock stars, for example, were held up and examined for their wealth, lavish lifestyles, parties, and sexual freedom. In some cases, such as the Beatles, the trend toward looking for alternative spiritual outlets was emulated as many took on nontraditional religions, such as Buddhism or Hinduism. Movies, television programs, billboards, and newspaper advertisements promoted sexually explicit images, reinforcing the notion that people's sexual desires and actions were not shameful taboos but integral components of their identity. Interest in religion was declining, but interest in spirituality was on the rise.
