Point out the main ideas from Enrico Ferri and Social Defense.

What will be an ideal response?

Enrico Ferri (1897/1917) believed that moral insensibility underscored by low intelligence were the criminal’s most marked characteristics: The criminal has “defective resistance to criminal tendencies and temptations, due to that ill balanced impulsiveness which characterizes children and savages” (P. 11). Given this conception of criminals, his only rationale for punishment was social defense. This theory of punishment asserts that its purpose is not to deter or to rehabilitate but to defend society from criminal predation. Ferri reasoned that if criminals were not capable of basing their behavior on rational calculus, how could they be deterred? Rather, criminals must be locked up for as long as possible so that they no longer pose a threat to society.
